Cardinal Cushing Centers honored South Shore Bank President & Chief Executive Officer Jim Dunphy at its annual Springtime Gala. Dunphy was honored with the Richard Cardinal Cushing Award along with Cushing Board member Meg Kelleher who received the Franciscan Leadership Award as part of this year’s gala theme of volunteerism. Cardinal Cushing Centers, the second largest employer on the South Shore, is a caring intergenerational community where people with intellectual disabilities live full and meaningful lives at home, work, school, and play.
Dunphy, who resides in Quincy, and his colleagues at South Shore Bank, have been volunteering their time and talents for decades – heading up a St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser for Cushing that brings in approximately $150,000 every year. Supporting Cushing and its people has become a personal passion for Dunphy and his team.
“Volunteerism is one of the cornerstones of South Shore Bank,” said Dunphy. “It’s an honor to support Cushing and all that they stand for. We truly believe that no matter how much you give of your time, you will get so much more in return.”
Dunphy's dedication extends beyond his work at Cardinal Cushing Centers; he also actively participates on the Boards of multiple nonprofits, with a strong focus on empowering underserved youth through educational opportunities and mentorship programs. Emphasizing the importance of community investment, Dunphy highlights the interconnected relationship between clients, the Bank, and local communities, all working collaboratively towards a common goal of strong, thriving communities.
Dunphy was truly touched when South Shore Bank Board Chairman and longtime Cushing board member Michael Sheehan presented him with artwork made by Cushing students. It depicts Dunphy with Mickey Mouse ears, symbolic of the trip to Disney World he helps make possible for graduating Cushing students each year.
“I have been involved with Cardinal Cushing Centers for 50 years, working to support this impactful mission,” said Sheehan. “Jim Dunphy has taken volunteerism to the next level, throwing his heart into Cushing and creating deep, meaningful friendships within its community.”
Kelleher, of Marshfield, has volunteered at Cushing in several capacities including the Board of Directors, the Development Committee, as well as having volunteered at Cushing Café.
This year’s Cardinal Cushing Centers Springtime Gala fundraiser was held at the Boston Seaport Hotel, with more than 400 people attending. The event included a cocktails & mocktails reception, fund-a-need auction, dinner, awards presentation, and the highlight of the evening - a fashion show featuring students and adults with intellectual disabilities who walked the runway alongside “celebrity” models –business owners and supporting partners from the South Shore who believe in Cushing’s mission. The event raised $580,000.
